We have become increasingly more dependent on the Web. We use websites for tenant screening, to buy books and clothes, to manage our finances, and to connect with our family and friends. Unfortunately, there are criminals who create fake websites that are designed to take your money or private information. Before making a purchase or providing sensitive information, there are two things to think about: 1) do you trust the company you are purchasing from or providing sensitive information to? and 2) is your connection from your computer to the company’s computer secure? If you’re working with a company you trust and using a secure connection, your information is safe.
There are two big ways to tell if you have a secure connection. First is the address bar; secure websites have an address that starts with http”s” for secure. Second, a secure site has a padlock icon in the browser. Companies can have their websites reviewed and validated by licensed unbiased companies called certificate authorities. These rigorous reviews ensure the company and its website are trustworthy. Sites that are deemed trustworthy display a green colored bar, including the company name, along with the address.
